Accountancy professor Eric Marinich passes away at age 49

It is with profound sadness that we share news of the death of associate teaching professor of accountancy Dr. Eric Marinich, at the age of 49.

Jenny Darroch, Dean and Mitchell P. Rales Chair in Business Leadership, commented, “Over his 11 years at the Farmer School of Business, Eric had a tremendous positive impact on our ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs, faculty and staff, industry partners, and everyone he met. He was not only a talented and passionate professor – he was a valued friend, mentor, and colleague, and the news of his passing has been devastating to us all. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family and all who had the honor of knowing him.”

"I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken to learn of his passing. Dr. Marinich was, without a doubt, the most passionate and caring professor I have ever encountered. Every day that I attended his class was a good day, he never failed to make accounting enjoyable and engaging," a former ºÚÁÏÉçÇø said on a memorial page.

"Although I only took one class with Dr. Marinich, his contagious smile and energy was something I always looked forward to in his class. I am deeply saddened by the loss of a professor who cared so much about his ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs. There a wasn't a class where he didn't make us laugh. He turned honors accounting content into something interesting, relatable, and fun. I will always remember him telling us to "go get a burger at Skippers" after our midterm before emailing him about our grades which made so many in our class laugh," another former ºÚÁÏÉçÇø wrote.

"Eric meant so much in the lives of thousands of ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs; colleagues and alumni at Miami; friends from his alma maters of Miami, the University of Cincinnati, and Michigan State University; and literally everyone else who was lucky enough to know him for even a moment," Anne Farrell, chair of the Department of Accountancy, said. "Eric was not just a colleague but also a dear friend of mine from well before he came to Miami. He's an MSU PhD alum too; getting through the same PhD program creates very strong bonds!"

Marinich graduated from ºÚÁÏÉçÇø with a finance degree in 1999, and returned to Miami as an assistant professor in 2013 after completing his PhD at MSU. He taught ACC 222: Introduction to Managerial Accounting, which is one of the large introductory accountancy courses at the Farmer School of Business.

Cards, notes or remembrances for Eric's family can be dropped off in a basket in the FSB 1022 lobby (the basket will be there into mid-February). These will be regularly collected and delivered to his mother Ruth Ann Marinich and sister Fran Verdon. If you are not on campus, cards / remembrances can be mailed to:
