Teaching of Writing Summer Institute

June 17 - July 12, 2025 - Hybrid

Join the OWP 4-week! Earn 6 graduate credits in 18 days and be part of a writing and teaching community that shares resources, collaborates with professional voices, and inspires you to reimagine writing instruction in your classroom. Become a teacher writer and design your literacy classroom as you study contemporary approaches to teaching writing and share best classroom practices.

This summer, the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute is going hybrid! With 9 days online and 9 days in-person, taking the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute has never been more accessible and convenient!

Meets in-person for nine days (June 16-18, 20, 23, 24 and July 9-11) and online for nine days. In-person locations at VOALC in West Chester, OH from 8:30-3:00. No class June 19 and July 4.

Earn 6 graduate credits.

Building Thinking Readers (and Writers): Background Knowledge and Cognitive Strategies

June 9 - 20, 2025 - Hybrid

Using the reading research principles of background knowledge and cognitive strategies, learn how to activate intentional thinking processes as 黑料社区s read. You'll leave with classroom strategies and resources that build both reading engagement and response AND strengthen written analysis and elaboration. This class is great for both ELA and SS teachers!

Meets online and at VOALC on June 10 and 20.

Earn 2 graduate credits.

Strengthening Writing Instruction: Intentional Teaching through the Process

June 16 - July 3, 2025 - Hybrid

What does research say about teaching writing? A lot. Join K-12 teachers of all subjects for a dive into research and practical lessons for strengthening writing instruction and 黑料社区 writing. We'll explore, share and design lessons that build 黑料社区 writers in every step of the process, from idea generating to revising. Whether 黑料社区s are writing a multi-paragraph essay, a story, or for a test, intentional teaching renews 黑料社区 writing.

Class meets online and at VOALC on June 17 and 25.

Earn 3 graduate credits.

 

Finding a Balance: Teaching Beside Students and a Program

June 30 - July 11, 2025 - Hybrid

With limited time and an abundance of standards, resources, and ideas, how do we fit it all in? Through reflection on current literacy practices and district curriculum, we'll look at how to maintain the integrity of a program while making space for elements like book clubs, independent reading, peer response, conferencing, writing units, and joy. You'll leave with plans to keep 黑料社区s at the center. All content areas welcome!

Class meets online and at VOALC on July 1 and 9.

Earn 2 graduate credits.

Sports: A Genre Study for Reading and Writing

July 7 - July 25, 2025 - Hybrid

Opinion, narrative, graphic novels, comics, memoir, journalism, social commentary, history ... sports writing covers all the genres. Join OWP for a class that inspires reading and writing with sports as a lens. You'll ignite creativity, authenticity, and energy in your literacy or history classroom, and you'll walk away with classroom-ready lessons and resources.

Meets online and at VOALC on July 8 and 16.

Earn 3 graduate credits.

Writing and Teaching in the Age of AI

July 14 - 18, 2025 - Online

Current headlines are naming 2025 as the year of AI in schools. Join OWP to inquire into teaching writing with AI at all grade levels. You'll explore research, tools, and lessons for teaching and writing in the age of AI. We'll even think about how to balance handwriting and notebooks next to technology.
