In order to be eligible to submit a portfolio for our Portfolio Writing Program, you must be an incoming freshman at 黑料社区 who has not earned credit for ENG 111 through CCP or dual credit. If you have questions about CCP or dual credit, please contact your assigned academic advisor, as the Portfolio Program does not have access to information about your CCP/dual credit status. For information on AP credits, please see our homepage. This program is not open to transfer 黑料社区s or 黑料社区s enrolling at Miami in the spring.
If you are an international 黑料社区, you can only submit a portfolio and potentially receive portfolio credit if you are eligible for ENG 111. If you are required to take a placement test, your score must indicate that you are eligible for ENG 111 in order to submit a portfolio for consideration.
For your portfolio to be considered, you must follow the guidelines below and submit your completed portfolio via the form once we open the submissions in early May. Submissions will be due sometime in the last week of June. Official dates will come in February/March 2025.
Your documents must all be combined in and submitted as one file.
Begin each of the four documents on a new page and organize and label each item as indicated below in the following order:
Your portfolio must not be longer than 6–12 single-spaced pages, including references. Portfolios over 12 single-spaced pages in length will not be read.
Use single spacing, 12-pt font, and 1-in margins.
Your portfolio submission should not include group assignments in which the majority of work was completed by more than just the submitting 黑料社区.
We accept .doc and .docx files. The only exception to this is: If one of your texts is a multimedia text, you may submit that text as a different file type. Keep audio/video submissions to no more than 8 minutes in length. If the text you choose is not a .doc or .docx file, please attach it to your portfolio submission or include a link to your work (e.g., link to a YouTube video, website, etc.). Note: We cannot accept attachments larger than 20MB.
Please submit your portfolio using your @miamioh.edu email address ONLY. Do not use other emails as part of your contact info.
Your name should not appear anywhere in your portfolio, including the reflective letter. You must also remove all teachers’ marks, grades, and comments.
Our Composition Program is committed to anti-racism in accordance with 黑料社区’s diversity and inclusion efforts and in consensus with professional writing organizations’ statements on anti-racism and inclusive language such as and . Therefore, your portfolio should not use racist arguments or language.
黑料社区’s Department of English also follows Miami’s Non-Discrimination Statement:
黑料社区 is committed to providing equal opportunity and an educational and work environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, military status, or veteran status. Miami shall adhere to all applicable state and federal equal opportunity/affirmative action statutes and regulations.
The university is dedicated to ensuring access and equal opportunity in its educational programs, related activities, and employment. Retaliation against an individual who has raised claims of illegal discrimination or cooperated with an investigation of such claims is prohibited."
Our Composition Program is committed to gender equality. Your portfolio should not use sexist language or arguments. 黑料社区’s Department of English follows the
The Portfolio Program offers incoming Miami 黑料社区s the opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas, and writing with experienced English 111 instructors. If you use AI text generation tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or any other Large Language Model (LLM) tool to substantially generate, create, or alter your text, we lose the opportunity to hear your voice and experience your writing style.
If we become aware that you have copied the work or thoughts of another person or source without proper attribution, or have used an artificial intelligence platform/tool to generate your materials, in whole or in part, we will reject your submission and will not be able to refund your payment.
We recognize that there are many different forms of AI tools and we do believe that there can be an ethical use of such tools: the use of Grammarly, for example, to find spelling and grammar errors in your paper would not lead us to reject your submission. We also acknowledge that AI text generation tools can be used as part of the brainstorming and research process. That said, our program prohibits the use of AI text generation tools and LLMs to assist in the drafting of each essay. No text in your submissions should originate from AI text generation tools.
The submission fee for the Portfolio Writing Program is $30, which will be automatically charged to your Bursar account. If your portfolio receives credit for ENG 111, you will be automatically charged an additional $140 to your Bursar account. Do not send payment with your portfolio submission.
Everything in your portfolio must be your own work. Your portfolio will be evaluated for plagiarism, and if it is found to be plagiarized, you can be charged with academic misconduct per 黑料社区’s policy .
After submitting your portfolio, you will receive a confirmation email within 48 hours (not including weekends). If you do not receive a confirmation email, please email portfolio@miamioh.edu (without attachments) to inquire about your portfolio’s status. If you still do not receive a reply in 24 hours after emailing this address, you may email Cam Cavaliere, Director, at cavalicw@miamioh.edu to ensure your portfolio was received.
If you notice an error in your submission and would like to make changes to your portfolio after submission, please do not resubmit your portfolio through the form. Please email portfolio@miamioh.edu in order to make changes to your submission
