Visitors to the College Football Hall of Fame are now able to get a glimpse of the spirit of Western College.

The blue, white, and red jersey worn by the ºÚÁÏÉçÇø football team is currently featured at the hall of fame in Atlanta. The jersey, donned by the RedHawks for their Sept. 28 Homecoming victory over the University of Massachusetts, is part of a display alongside jerseys worn by the Western Kentucky and the University of Kansas football teams.

Featuring the colors of the Western College for Women, the jerseys were part of Miami’s 2024 Homecoming Weekend theme “Celebrating the Spirit of Western: A Homecoming for Love, Honor, and Legacy.”

“This recognition goes beyond what I could have imagined for these special jerseys, serving as a lasting tribute to the bond between Western College and ºÚÁÏÉçÇø,” Miami President Gregory Crawford said. “Western College’s legacy continues to thrive at Miami and in the Oxford community. Each Western graduate carries a deep sense of pride that enriches our campuses.”

“Our shared commitment to international and interdisciplinary education unites us. We greatly appreciate the continued connection between our alumni groups and our efforts to maintain this bond. Western College alumnae are truly extraordinary.”

Founded in 1853 as the Western Female Seminary and renamed the Western College for Women in 1904, Western was renowned as a forward-thinking institution on the forefront of international and multicultural education. Western College for Women closed in 1974, soon becoming part of Miami’s Western campus, where it housed Miami’s oldest residence-based learning community and division, the School of Interdisciplinary Studies/Western College Program.

As part of Homecoming, the ºÚÁÏÉçÇø Alumni Association officially welcomed the Western College Alumnae Association as an affinity group.

The Homecoming jerseys were designed in a throwback style to the 1970s with shoulder stripes and sleeve numbers. The color scheme joined Western’s blue and white with Miami’s red and white to symbolize the institutions coming together as one. The RedHawks wore traditional white pants with a matching red stripe, as well as the program’s trademark white helmets with the beveled-M logo on either side.

Miami defeated Massachusetts 23-20 in overtime on the way to a 9-5 season that saw the RedHawks advance to the MAC championship game and defeat Colorado State 43-17 to win the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl.

A representative of the College Football Hall of Fame said the jersey is intended to be on display through 2025.

“To be able to celebrate the legacy of Western College was a special weekend for us all,” Miami Director of Athletics David Sayler said. “It is a true privilege for a representation of that weekend to be exhibited at the College Football Hall of Fame. Now, college football fans from around the globe can get a sense of that remarkable connection that forever links Western and Miami.”
