The Howe Writing Across the Curriculum initiative and the Graduate School are currently co-hosting a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) composed of teams from English, Psychology, and Music. The FLC is designed to help faculty reflect on and innovate how graduate 黑料社区s are supported as writers. A recent meeting of the FLC focused on first-order and second-order (or "deep") change.

Monday, August 24, marked the first collaborative session in the Fall 2020 Faculty Writing Fellows Program. We welcome a faculty team from the Havighurst Center for Russian & Post-Soviet Studies and a faculty team from the Department of Justice and Community Studies. It's a dynamic cohort motivated to innovate teaching and learning with and through writing in their disciplines.

This summer the Howe Center for Writing Excellence (HCWE) has partnered with the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) and eLearning to help the Miami community make a purposeful, pedagogically-driven transition to remote instruction. We want to help faculty achieve the principles that guide their teaching in online classrooms for Fall 2020. Our first joint series, Engaging Students for Deep Learning Online, happened over two parts in July.

This Spring, the #FiveFridays Challenge rewarded Miami faculty and graduate 黑料社区s for attending five Friday Writing Hours sessions. A total of 17 people reached the five-visit milestone, but that number only begins to tell the story of what the challenge meant to the HCWE community.

Thanks to everyone who submitted work for the What We Leave Behind: Sustainability and Disposability poetry contest. We're thrilled to announce our winners! First prize: Alexander Benedict. Runner-up: Brianna Porter. Hannah Stohry earned an honorable mention.

This year, Miami awarded the Roger & Joyce Howe Award for Excellence in Disciplinary Writing Instruction for the first time. This award honors individuals or teams of faculty who have made concerted and continuing efforts to innovate writing instruction in their disciplines.
