Why Miami?
ºÚÁÏÉçÇø was the first campus I visited that actually felt like it could be my future home -- the layout and aesthetic of the campus was exactly what I was looking for in a college campus. My sister began her first semester at Miami in 2020, so I also chose Miami because she spoke very highly of her academic and social experiences here.
How did you choose your major?
I knew from the beginning of high school that when I reached college, I would pursue a degree in Journalism. However, the Media, Journalism and Film department's unique requirement of a second major, although intimidating at first, encouraged me to think beyond just my Journalism major. I landed on Political Science as my second major because after taking a U.S. government class my senior year of high school, I knew I wanted to focus my reporting skills on politics.
I added my Classical Studies minor after my first two years at Miami because by then, I had already completed four semesters of Latin for the College of Arts and Science language requirement. The minor was easy to add and has enriched my learning ever since by giving me a classical understanding of the origin of many different parts of our modern life, including our political system. My addition of my classics minor is a perfect example of a liberal arts education working at its finest!
Key Moment at Miami
My favorite class I have taken so far at Miami has been Intro to International Studies (ITS 201). The professor, Dilchoda Berdieva, was extremely engaging, and the class opened my eyes to a career in journalism I had never yet thought of: international reporting. I took this class for the Miami Plan last minute when I was unable to get into another humanities class, and it ended up being the most enriching class I've ever been in.
Another Miami Moment
My position as managing editor of The Miami Student newspaper has given me real-life experience working in a ºÚÁÏÉçÇø newsroom and reporting on a variety of different topics. I have gotten two professional internships and one freelancing job because of the experience I gained at The Student, and I will be running for the position of editor-in-chief this spring!
Other Notable Experience
For J-Term during my sophomore year, I studied abroad in London, England for three and a half weeks with a political science program called "Law and Policy in London." This program offered the perfect opportunity to study abroad for a short period of time while also working towards my major requirements. This experience confirmed my desire to pursue international reporting and made me more comfortable traveling and living by myself.
Advice to Prospective Students
Miami's liberal arts education has given me ample opportunity to not only prepare for a career post graduation, but learn a lot about the world around me. From classes in the humanities to the CAS language requirement, I feel prepared to graduate with a deeper understanding of the world we live in, as opposed to just learning information I will use in my career.
What are your career goals?
I am aiming for a career in journalism, hopefully working for a national or international news desk at a reputable, respectable news source.
